Solar Eclipse…

Tonight’s solar eclipse was not going to be at it’s maximum until after the sun had set at this location. Though clouds moved in and out during the hour long process, it did present a nice view just as the sun dipped below the horizon. Right now, the moon is too far from the earth to completely obscure the sun, so this was an annular eclipse.

Supermoon…

Every 18 years or so the moon reaches a point in its orbit that is exactly opposite the earth from the sun, and is also at the spot in its elliptical orbit that is closest to the earth. This makes for the largest possible visible size of the full moon, and is called the “supermoon”. It’s not a dramatic size increase from normal…about the difference between a nickel and a quarter held a foot from your eyes. It was a nice sight however and worthy of taking a shot. I don’t think I can wait till 2030 to get another opportunity.

Mockingbird at twilight…

This boy is looking for a sweet thing to share his love nest. The mockingbird can learn and imitate up to 200 sounds of other birds or other sources. I swear I hear him do a frog at one point. The behavior of jumping up 2 or 3 feet is also a mating ritual designed to impress the female. I guess the more songs he knows, the smarter the lady thinks he is. (The videos advertised after this are not mine)

This turtle just emerged from his winters nap in the mud.

Dusty trapped this chicken eating raccoon at his farm and released it at the airport.

Some very active storms passed just to the north of here this evening. Tornado warnings were in effect. We got zip rain from these, though I’m sure someone did.

Prairie Mounds…

Northeastern Oklahoma is dotted with many of these mound features. There is no clear agreement on how these formed. They do make an interesting break in the landscapes.

Equine Friends…

I spotted this group of horses on a large ranch north of Childers. A good natured bunch, I found them intriguing. I don’t know what breed they are. Their longish hair is interesting (or is this just Winter Coat)….whatever, I like it.

Bull Blast.

Went to the Bull Riding event at Wesson Arena by Delaware last night. Didn’t get quality photos since I was mainly minding the grandson, but here are a few shots. For the photo people out there, these were taken at ISO 12,800 due to the low light conditions.
